比丘們,即如強盜們用一把雙柄的齒鋸把你肢解開來之時,而你們卻生起嗔怒的話,便是沒有聽從我的教導。比丘們,即使是在那個時後, 依然得這樣訓練自己:決不受其影響,決不說出惡語。應當同情那些人並運用慈的力量來感化他們,且以他們爲出發點,使所有的眾生也俱有慈那樣的——廣大、廣博、無量、無敵意、無惡意。你們應當那樣訓練自己。
MN. 21 Kakacūpamasuttaṃ
Ubhatodaṇḍakena cepi, bhikkhave, kakacena corā ocarakā aṅgamaṅgāni okanteyyuṃ, tatrāpi yo mano padūseyya, na me so tena sāsanakaro. Tatrāpi vo, bhikkhave, evaṃ sikkhitabbaṃ – ‘na ceva no cittaṃ vipariṇataṃ bhavissati, na ca pāpikaṃ vācaṃ nicchāressāma, hitānukampī ca viharissāma mettacittā na dosantarā. Tañca puggalaṃ mettāsahagatena cetasā pharitvā viharissāma tadārammaṇañca sabbāvantaṃ lokaṃ mettāsahagatena cetasā vipulena mahaggatena appamāṇena averena abyābajjhena pharitvā viharissāmā’ti. Evañhi vo, bhikkhave, sikkhitabbaṃ.
比丘們!如果學習、修習、多多修其慈心解脫,以作為自己的交通工具、基礎、奉行、熟知、完全採取, 則有十一種之功德。何等為十一呢? 即:
1.安穩入眠
2.安樂
3.不見惡夢
4.被所有人喜歡
5.被非人喜歡
6.為諸天所守護
7.不受火、 毒、劍傷害
8.能快速入定
9.容顏明亮
10.不再恐懼死亡
11.趣於梵世甚至更高。

AN11.16 Mettāsuttaṃ
Mettāya, bhikkhave, cetovimuttiyā āsevitāya bhāvitāya bahulīkatāya yānīkatāya vatthukatāya anuṭṭhitāya paricitāya susamāraddhāya ekādasānisaṃsā pāṭikaṅkhā.
Katame ekādasa? Sukhaṃ supati, sukhaṃ paṭibujjhati, na pāpakaṃ supinaṃ passati, manussānaṃ piyo hoti, amanussānaṃ piyo hoti, devatā rakkhanti, nāssa aggi vā visaṃ vā satthaṃ vā kamati, tuvaṭaṃ cittaṃ samādhiyati, mukhavaṇṇo vippasīdati, asammūḷho kālaṃ karoti, uttari appaṭivijjhanto brahmalokūpago hoti. Mettāya, bhikkhave, cetovimuttiyā āsevitāya bhāvitāya bahulīkatāya yānīkatāya vatthukatāya anuṭṭhitāya paricitāya susamāraddhāya ime ekādasānisaṃsā pāṭikaṅkhā’’ti. Pañcamaṃ.
